The science of preserving nature since 1964

Community Outreach

Almstead arborist, Fred Hoffmann met with a small group of botany students and employees of the National Parks Association to discuss the application of arboriculture to preserve trees and help them to grow in our environment.  He discussed methods of evaluating the overall health of trees and treatments for pests and diseases.

The students also collected pin oak acorns for a propagation project they are working on.  Fred instructed them on the proper way to prep, propagate and plant a tree. He also discussed the importance of a proper root collar and finding an optimal location for a tree’s future success.  The students were well engaged with Fred during the discussion and asked pertinent questions as they collected acorns, pine-cones, and sweet gum balls.  They hope to propagate the seeds they collected successfully and plant trees in parks next spring with the help of the National Parks Association.
