Careers at Almstead

2018 Summer Internship Program

Our Program

The 2018 summer internship program at Almstead Tree & Shrub Care Co. provides current college students the opportunity to utilize the education, knowledge and experience acquired during their undergraduate or graduate studies. You will be mentored at a company with one of the best reputations in the industry. We will provide you with practical experience, along with an opportunity to enhance skills through active participation and involvement in a variety of functions. The intern will work closely with Almstead’s team of industry professionals to prepare for a career in tree, shrub and/or lawn care. We will work with you to develop a specific program, tailored to fit your needs. You will be assigned to an Almstead Arborist who will be your main point of contact for the duration of your internship. Your Arborist will schedule you to spend time with other Almstead professionals and technicians, who will work closely with you on their areas of expertise.

Some of the various areas of service you may be involved in include:

Arbor Sales

The Arbor Sales division includes a full range of services. Each service is recommended and overseen by a professionally Certified Arborist. You will be assigned to and shadow an Almstead Arborist who will act as your mentor for the duration of your internship. Your daily tasks may include: preparing for the day, setting up crews on jobs sold, going on sales appointments, addressing customer concerns, client consultation, performing property evaluation, preparing estimates and presenting them to clients, and cold-calling.

Arbor Care

Our original area of service since 1964, the Arbor Care division will allow you to gain hands-on experience in our general tree care operations. You will be paired with an Almstead field professional at some point during your internship program, who will teach you about custom pruning services, tree removals, stump grinding, planting, plant and tree identification, diagnosing tree and plant issues, chipper and chainsaw operation, proper safety protocol, and possibly even tree climbing!

Plant Health Care

The Plant Health Care (PHC) Technician focuses on treating insect and disease problems on trees and shrubs utilizing safe and effective controls. Our PHC monitoring service enables our technicians to spot treat for targeted results, rather than relying on blanket coverage. As some point in your internship program, you will be assigned to an Almstead Plant Health Care Technician who will teach you about Plant Health Care. Your daily tasks may include: assisting on our plant health care rigs, following work orders, inspecting plants, diagnosing plant related issues, learning about treatment options, plant and tree identification, learning about proper mixing and safe handling procedures of chemicals, and more.

Lawn Care

Almstead's Lawn Care Services include fertilization, weed control, disease and insect control, seeding, core aeration, and more. Our holistic approach to lawn care takes the health of an entire property into account. We offer traditional, organic based and pure organic options. At some point in your internship program, you will be scheduled to work with an Almstead Lawn Care Technician who will teach you about Lawn Care. Your daily tasks may include: learning about lawns, learning about insects/diseases/treatment options, and learning about the lawn care issues we encounter throughout the season.

Organic Care

Our Organic Care Services for trees, shrubs and lawns focus on increasing plant health by improving soil biology, and on treating disease and insect problems with organically derived controls. We use many scientifically sound, highly-effective organic care practices. You will learn about brewing activated compost tea, biological insect controls, relieving compaction by employing an air-spade, and supplementing soils with organically active compost and amendments.

We are currently accepting internship applications which will commence in May/June 2018, and will last for approximately 2-3 months. Please send a resume and cover letter to jobs@almstead.com explaining your interest, and why you feel you’d be a great candidate for Almstead’s 2018 summer internship program. The deadline for submissions is April 29th, 2018.
